Join us for a book discussion on plastic's impact on human health and the environment with Beyond Plastics policy director, Johnathan Berard and Just Zero's executive director, Kirstie Pecci.
Plastic is everywhere — wrapped around our food, stitched into our clothes, even coursing through our veins. What began as a marvel of modern science has become a toxic industry that is affecting our health, polluting our planet, and driving climate change—but there is still time to turn off the tap and live in a world without pointless plastic.
That’s the hopeful message at the heart of THE PROBLEM WITH PLASTIC: How We Can Save Ourselves and Our Planet Before It’s Too Late (The New Press; December 2, 2025). The Problem With Plastic provides a powerful investigation into plastic’s impact on human health and the environment, a searing indictment of the plastics industry that created this mess, and a playbook for how we can fight back.
Join Beyond Plastics policy director, Johnathan Berard and Kirstie Pecci, Just Zero’s executive director, for a discussion of the book and to learn how you can help save yourself and the planet from plastic pollution.
Johnathan Berard is the Policy Director at Beyond Plastics and has over a decade of public policy and strategic communications experience in the nonprofit, government, and academic sectors. As the Rhode Island State Director at Clean Water Action, he conducted the very first trawl for microplastics in Narragansett Bay, wrote Rhode Island's statewide plastic bag ban, and helped lead the the fight against the plastic industry's attempts to change state law to allow so-called "advanced recycling" facilities to be built in Rhode Island.
Kirstie Pecci is the Executive Director of Just Zero. She has spent the last decade discovering the experts with real solutions to our waste crisis and urging governments and corporations across the country to adopt these solutions and put an end to our toxic cycle of production and disposal.
