“Like the Stars of the Heaven”: Jewelry in Ancient Assyria
Worn by men and women for thousands of years, jewelry enlivens our bodies and enthralls our senses. This conversation brings to life the aesthetic qualities of the jewelry on one of the Worcester Art Museum’s ancient masterpieces: an eight-foot tall stone relief from the ancient Assyrian capital of Nimrud in Iraq. Though not immediately visible, the divine figure shown on this relief wears various items of jewelry: earrings, arm bands, and bracelets, all of which would have been made of fine metals and stones.
Join Assistant Professor of Classics at the College of the Holy Cross, Elizabeth Knott, for a conversation with Dr. Amy Gansell, one of the world’s leading experts on Assyrian jewelry, and Iraqi-American jewelry artist Zahra Almajidi for a discussion of the sensory impact of jewelry, then and now. 8 audience members will receive complimentary tickets to the Worcester Art Museum, where they can view this ancient artwork in person.
Supported by the Worcester Public Library, the Worcester Art Museum, and the College of the Holy Cross.
