Banx RoomA Proper Fit: Women at Work in a City of Corsets
Worcester Public Library presents a book talk by Anne Marie Murphy on her new book A Proper Fit: Women at Work in a City of Corsets. Discover a city full of women making corsets: Worcester, Massachusetts from 1860 to 1980. The city hosted over 120 corset-making businesses and half of them were owned by women. This book tells the stories of many of those female business owners, how they got into the business, how they learned to make this challenging garment, and how they self-supported in the city for over a century, as small shop "corsetieres" and forewomen and traveling saleswomen and even as a factory owner.
