Discover the stories of those laid to rest in one of Worcester's earliest cemeteries—paupers, patriots, and townsfolk—whose lives shaped the early fabric of our community.
Beneath the green grass and tangled roots of the common lie stones worn smooth by time, graves forgotten by all but the oldest records. This twilight tour reveals the mystery and memory of the long-lost souls, some of whom still rest beneath your feet. We will begin in the 1st floor meeting room of the library where you will learn about the history of Worcester's 2nd cemetery established in 1728. Founding father, Jonas Rice was one of the first settlers laid to rest here and his stone is one that can still be seen there today. After our presentation we will walk as a group to the common to view what remains of the original burial ground and explore the footprint of the original cemetery. Flashlights will be provided.
This tour is designed to honor the dead and educate the living. There will be no jump scares, staged hauntings, or disrespectful behavior permitted.
